119: survival tips on being the smart shopper

#1: Know your partner’s shopping interest(s)

Shopping is never a selfish individualistic affair;– unless you find yourself trodden amidst a crowd of tattoo-eyebrowed elbow-shoving elderly women with tight curls, in which case I would advise you to question your presence there in the first place;– so while you’re looking out for items to strike off from your wishlist, grab hold of items your partner might be interested in.

I was intently choosing shawls at a recent flea market, when the mister alerted me to some adorable wooden brooches to add to my quirky collection. And so I ended up with the two ribbon bows, and the cute lil hijabi girl. Interesting fact: all of the brooches / pins above had been purchased at flea markets!

#2: Keep an eye out for great deals;– is it worth it?

It may sound redundant, considering it’s the purported Great sale after all, but when there is a ‘SALE’ signage plastered all over the window display of every store you walk past, it’s most tempting to just grab anything (and everything) without actually wondering if it’s really worth it, or whether you really need it. Though, let’s face it, the latter part of that statement never really surfaces during shopping. So how do you tell if it’s really worth it?

Personally, GSS to me is the time I grab hold of items I wouldn’t normally purchase, largely due to the doesn’t-make-sense-to-me exorbitant pricing. And when you’ve got $120 off a gorgeous lace teal dress, it would be almost absurd not to grab hold of it.

#3: Keep an eye out for great deals;– do you need it? will you use it?

As aforementioned, it’s really tricky to ask yourself if you need a particular item when shopping; it takes away the thrill and therapy from shopping, to be precise. Hence, for the days when I don’t really want to answer the necessity aspect of shopping, I qualify the statement with regard to usage.

While it’s true I definitely do not need all these items to add to, and fuel, my growing collection and obsession with Elf cosmetics, I justify the purchase (in this case, the mister’s purchase for me) with these points:-

(a) no overlapping: ensuring that I do not own any of the items in the same shade ;

(b) usage: with the exception of the false lashes, I will definitely use all of the items ; and

(c) a great deal: to purchase them as a giftset was definitely a greater deal vis-a-vis purchasing the items individually.

#4: Conveniently forget all the rules when the mister brings you into a Tiffany’s.

Who cares about GSS anymore! *beams*
